There's a million thoughts running through his mind. Ones about what Aleja had said to him before they came to town. Thoughts about these people and the things they've done to him. Not just now but before any of this. Things he had actually seen but had ignored. Things now that he can't stop but to think about.
So he moves to help her into the wagon, though his gaze isn't entirely focused, avoiding meeting her gaze.
Even as he climbs up into the wagon, gathering up the reins.
"I will defend you to them. Never think I would pick them over you."
